Detail

The remaining time, in full

A live countdown to your moment

Set any future date and time — a birthday, a wedding, a launch, an exam, a holiday, New Year — and this timer shows exactly how long is left: days, hours, minutes and seconds, ticking down live every second. It runs entirely on your device using your own clock, so the target is read in your local time zone and the countdown is correct wherever you are. Leave the tab open on a second screen and it makes a simple, honest event timer.

How it works

Remaining = Target moment − Current moment, split into days, hours, minutes, seconds

The timer subtracts the current time from your target and breaks the difference into calendar-friendly units: every 86,400 seconds become a day, then hours, minutes and seconds cascade down. The total seconds, hours and minutes are also shown in the stats, because "how many hours until Friday?" is often the real question. When the target passes, the timer stops at zero and says the day is here rather than counting into negative numbers.

Countdowns across time zones

A target typed here means that wall-clock time where you are. If the event itself is somewhere else — a video call, a rocket launch, a match abroad — convert it first with the Time Zone Converter, or set up everyone's local start time with the Meeting Planner. For counting whole days between two dates without the live ticking, the Date Difference Calculator is the calmer tool.

Worked example

Counting down to January 1, 2027 from October 12, 2026 leaves exactly 81 days — watch the seconds box tick them away one by one.

How to use this calculator

  1. Type a label for your event, so the page knows what it is counting to.
  2. Pick the target date and time — in your local time zone.
  3. Watch the live boxes: days, hours, minutes and seconds remaining.
  4. Leave the tab open; it updates every second and stops at zero when the moment arrives.

Why countdowns feel motivating

A deadline stated as a date is easy to ignore; the same deadline as a shrinking number of days and seconds is not. Countdowns turn a vague future event into a visible quantity, which is why launches, fundraisers and study plans display them. If the number on this page feels big, that is useful information too — it is the honest size of the wait.

Only need the number of days, without the live ticking clock? The Days Until Calculator counts the days to any date — or since a past one — and names the weekday it falls on.

Frequently asked questions

Which time zone does the countdown use?
Yours. The target is read as local wall-clock time on your device, and the remaining time is measured against your device's clock. Two people in different zones counting to the same local time are counting to different moments.
Does it keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes — the remaining time is recalculated from the clock every second, not by counting ticks, so it stays accurate even if the browser throttles the tab. It stops cleanly at zero.
Can I count down to a time today?
Yes. Pick today's date and a later time and the timer shows hours, minutes and seconds with zero days. Past targets show the “day is here” state.
