Tip, total and split — in one answer
Enter the bill, choose how generous you want to be, and say how many people are splitting it: this calculator returns the tip, the new total, and — the number everyone at the table actually wants — the exact amount per person, tip included. The table underneath shows the same bill at six common tip percentages, so you can compare 15%, 18%, 20% and 25% side by side instead of recalculating when the table debates service quality.
How much should you tip?
Customs vary by place and service. In US restaurants, 15% is a baseline for adequate service, 18–20% is standard for good service, and 25% or more marks an excellent one; counter service and takeaway often get a few dollars or nothing, and many other countries include service in the price or expect only rounding up. This calculator does the arithmetic for any percentage you choose — deciding what the service was worth stays, properly, with you. If the bill includes drinks taxed differently or someone is paying separately for extras, split the shared part here and settle the extras individually.
Splitting fairly
An even split is the default social contract for shared meals, and this tool's per-person number divides both food and tip so nobody subsidises anyone else's tip. When the group ordered very unevenly, an even split of a bill can feel unfair; the Split Bill Calculator adds tax and weighted shares for those cases. Rounding per-person amounts up to the next dollar and letting the server keep the difference is a common, painless kindness that costs each person cents.
Worked example
A bill of $85 with an 18% tip: the tip is $15.30, the total is $100.30, and split four ways it is $25.08 per person.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the bill amount.
- Set the tip percentage — the table below shows other percentages for comparison.
- Enter how many people are splitting it.
- Read the per-person total in the green panel.
The mental-math shortcut
For a quick check without any tool: 10% of the bill is the decimal point moved once; 15% is 10% plus half of that; 20% is double the 10%. On an $85 bill: $8.50, $12.75 and $17 at a glance. The calculator's table is doing exactly this arithmetic precisely, for six percentages at once.
